Title: Unpopular Popularity
Abstract: I investigate the effect of popularity on individuals. In general an increase in popularity leads to further increases in popularity. I investigate possible heterogeneous effects of the favorability of popularity on an individual level. I use popularity shock to a sub-forum of the social media site www.reddit.com to look at the effect of popularity on the user level. Here, I find that to some users popularity seems to be unfavorable. Furthermore, by identifying users which are negatively effected by the popularity shock I try to identify possible channels which drives these results.
