Helmut Gründl has been working at Goethe University since 2010 and holds the Chair of Insurance. From October 2010 to March 2022 and from April 2024 to September 2025, he headed the International Center for Insurance Regulation.

From 1999 to 2010, he held the Dr. Wolfgang Schieren Chair of Insurance and Risk Management at Humboldt University in Berlin. Helmut Gründl completed his doctoral and post-doctoral studies at the University of Passau.

His research focuses on the economic analysis of insurance regulation. He led research projects at the Collaborative Research Center 649 “Economic Risk” in Berlin and at the LOEWE Research Center SAFE in Frankfurt.

Helmut Gründl was a member of the “Insurance and Reinsurance Stakeholder Group” of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) from 2011 to 2013, and has been a member of the “Insurance Advisory Board” of the German Financial Services Supervisory Authority (BaFin) since 2016.
