Dr. Markus Heckel

Dr. Markus Heckel is an external lecturer for M.A. Modern East Asian studies (MEAS).

He is the Deputy Director of the DAAD Tokyo Office and Head of Programs at the DWIH Tokyo (German Centre for Research and Innovation in Tokyo). Dr. Markus Heckel holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Duisburg-Essen with a thesis about the Bank of Japan. Before joining the DWIH, he was a Principal Researcher and led the ‘Sustainability and Resilience’ research group at the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ). From 2012 to 2018, he worked at the Faculty of Economics and Business at Goethe University Frankfurt. He has also taught at several universities, including Kobe University, Sophia University, Waseda University, University of Mainz, and University Halle-Wittenberg.
